Speed up your Blackberry Pearl by freeing up memory

by Paul Herrington

If you want your Blackberry Pearl to perform it’s best, you need to keep the memory cleaned out. There are a lot of things that can clog up the memory on your Pearl. This article covers a few biggest memory hogs and how to clean them up.

First of all, how much memory do you have available? Its very easy to find this out. Heres how:

1. Go into your phone options. You’ll find these by clicking on the wrench icon.

2. Move down and select STATUS.

3. FILE TOTAL lists the absolute capacity of your phones memory.

4. FILE FREE lists the amount of memory available right now.

Our goal is to increase the number listed under FILE FREE. The bigger that number, the better your phone will run.

The quickest and easiest thing to do is delete as much as you can from your inbox. Email can build up quickly, especially if you’re syncing with several addresses. Think twice before saving messages.

Using the Content Compression Technique

If you don’t already have content compression enabled on your Pearl, you’ll want to do that next. I can’t tell you exactly how much room this will open up since I’ve used it from day one. If you’re not using it, it will give you a quick boost in available memory.

1. With the main screen open you’ll see all of your icons on one screen (not the home screen).

2. Find the wrench icon and click on it.

3. Move down to SECURITY OPTIONS and click.

4. Move down to GENERAL SETTINGS and click.

5. Scroll to and click on CONTENT COMPRESSION.

6. If ENABLED is not selected, do so now.

7. Press the Blackberry Button (7 dots left of the pearl).

8. Scroll down and select Save.

Content compression is now activated on your phone. From now on your movies, pictures, music, emails and calendar items will take up a lot less room on your phone. This will increase the amount of memory you have available.

Deleting Programs You Never Use

I think I’ve played Brick Breaker once while in the doctors office. It was fun, but it’s not worth the memory it eats up. I deleted it. I also recommend going through all of the applications installed and removing those you rarely or never use.

1. Open up the main screen with all of your icons.

2. Highlight the little wrench and press the pearl button. These are your Blackberry options.

3. Click ADVANCED OPTIONS at the top of the list

4. Scroll to and click on Applications.

5. Wait for your Pearl to build the list of applications.

6. Press the Blackberry button (it’s just left of the Pearl).

7. Scroll down until you’ve highlighted DELETE and then press the pearl.

8. Scroll down to Delete and press the pearl button.

ATTENTION: Some of the apps will require a restart of your Pearl before they’re completely deleted.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll certainly notice how much faster your Pearl is running. Applications should open up much faster. If they don’t there are a number of other steps you can take that I’ll explore later.
