Free up the memory on your Blackberry Pearl

by Paul Herrington

Keeping your Blackberry Pearl running at optimum speeds, you’ll need to be careful your internal memory doesn’t get bogged down with all sorts of garbage. If it’s not watched closely, it will get full quickly and your phone will start to bog down. I’m going to talk about the biggest issues and how to manage them.

It’s important to know how much memory is available on your Pearl. This can be done quickly by following these steps:

1. Select the little icon that mostly like looks like a wrench. This is the options icon.

2. Move down and select STATUS.

3. File Total is the total amount of memory available on your device.

4. File Free is the amount of memory free at this time.

Our goal is to increase the number listed under FILE FREE. The bigger that number, the better your phone will run.

One of the first things you can do is clean out your inbox. This is pretty straight forward, but something that’s often overlooked. If you don’t need it on your phone, delete it.

Using the Content Compression Technique

If you don’t already have content compression enabled on your Pearl, you’ll want to do that next. I can’t tell you exactly how much room this will open up since I’ve used it from day one. If you’re not using it, it will give you a quick boost in available memory.

1. Start on your main screen (the one with all the icons).

2. Scroll to and click on options (should look like a wrench).

3. Use the pearl to move down to “SECURITY OPTIONS” and press the pearl button.

4. Move down to GENERAL SETTINGS and click.

5. Move down to CONTENT COMPRESSION and click.

6. If it doesnt say Enabled click on it and select it now.

7. Press the little button to the left of the pearl (it’s called the Blackberry button).

8. Scroll down and select Save.

That was easy wasn’t it? Now you have content compression enabled on your phone and you’ll open up a good amount of memory. This not only compression pictures, video and music, but also items in your calendar and inbox.

Removing Unused Programs

If you never play BrickBreaker, dont let it hog up all the memory on your Blackberry Pearl. You might be surprised at how many programs are hanging out on your Pearl. Heres how you find them and delete the ones you dont want or need.

1. From your HOME screen, press the “Blackberry Button”. This should give you a window with all of the icons on it.

2. Scroll to and click on options (looks like a wrench).

3. Click ADVANCED OPTIONS at the top of the list

4. Scroll to and click on Applications.

5. Wait for your Pearl to build the list of applications.

6. Click on the little button just to the left of the pearl. It should have 7 little dots on it.

7. Select DELETE and press the pearl.

8. That’s it. Now select any other programs you want to delete.

ATTENTION: Some of the apps will require a restart of your Pearl before they’re completely deleted.

This should leave you with a much faster Blackberry Pearl. Hopefully your apps are opening up much faster than they were before. If you find you still need some more free memory, consider removing additional applications. If you are still storing your photos, videos and other media on your internal memory, I strongly recommend a MicroSD card.
