The very first iPhone became a hit when it arrived in stores and online in 2007. It marked the birth, to some extent, of what we now consider to be the Smartphone and was welcomed by paying consumers! But what made the iPhone the incredible success story that it was?

Arguably the most notable thing about the device, the first thing that got people talking, was the integrated touch screen technology. Granted, touch screen technology was not a new thing! But this was the first time it was being made so widely available and feasibly affordable for a large number of consumers. A touch screen meant there was no need for a keyboard and Apple put that extra space to good use, in creating a screen that made up the majority of the front exterior of the phone and that made mobile browsing feasible and simple.

The device basically incorporated absolutely everyone that someone might want on a device they could carry in their pocket. It came with a fully functioning iPod MP3 player, the ability to stream Youtube video, in built camera, email, text messaging and telephone call capabilities, maps and, when the app store launched later, a seemingly limitless range of downloadable games and utilities. Today, there are more than 180,000 different applications on the app store, which have contributed to the more than 3 billion downloads from the app store since its launch.

With all that functionality, it’s little wonder that one thing we often forget to mentioning when discussing what’s so great about the gadget, how it looks. Gadget lovers like a slick design packed full of functionality. And Apple ticked both boxes. The design is something that remained fairly consistent across the first release, the 3G and the 3GS.

With demand soaring and the recent release of the iPad, it’s looking incredibly likely that Apple’s success is set to continue for some time to come. We want to browse, send and check emails and access our social networking facilities on the move and Apple is seeing to it that our demand is met.
